Sanitation Regulations (Click here for the Sanitation Pick-up Schedule)

Garbage Collections:
Garbage is collected from the curb twice a week beginning at 7:00 am. Recyclables are collected once a week. Yard waste is collected on Wednesday Only.

Receptacles:
Garbage must be placed in standard type garbage containers, no larger then 32 gallons. Each container must have handles and tight fitting covers. Covers cannot be attached to the cans. Garbage should not exceed 40 pounds. Plastic bags may be used: however, they must be tied and not overfilled as they will tear. Boxes, crates, cartons, and cardboard must be broken up and securely tied. Wood must be tied in bundles not to exceed 4 feet in length and 2 feet in diameter. Any nails must be removed or hammered down. To prevent injury to Village employees, glass panes must be “X” taped, wrapped in newspaper or brown paper and marked with the word “Glass”. Please do not use plastic bags when disposing of glass. Windows require a special pick up appointment.

The Village of Malverne prohibits placing garbage receptacles or rubbish at the curb prior to 7:00 PM on the day preceding scheduled pick up. Materials placed out late will be picked up the next scheduled pick up day.

Metals:
It is not necessary to schedule an appointment for pick up of bulk metal items. These items will be picked up on your recycling day, with the exception of items containing Freon (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers) which will be collected on Wednesdays. We do ask that you still limit the number of metal items to six (6), bundle loose items together whenever possible and place them at the curb the evening before collection. Refrigerator/freezer doors must be removed.

Newspapers/Magazines:
Newspapers/magazines will be collected on the same day as your scheduled recyclables. We ask that you tie them in bundles and put them along side your recycling bin. They will not be collected if they are in plastic bags.

Yard Waste:
Yard waste consists of grass cuttings, leaves, brush, branches, tree and bush clippings. These items can be placed in garbage pails and bags or tied securely in bundles that are not to exceed four (4) feet in length and two (2) feet in diameter. Thorn bearing bushes must be wrapped and tied to avoid injury to Village employees. Real Christmas trees are collected as yard waste. Wednesday is strictly yard waste collection day. An appointment for special pick up must be scheduled for the disposal of tree stumps.

Recyclables:
(Cans, bottles, plastics and newspapers/magazines)

Do's & Don'ts

  • DO Wash out food and liquids from all containers.
  • DO compress items when possible
  • DO place your recycling bin next to your regular garbage container.
  • DO check your plastic containers for their recycling number located in a triangle. Our recycling program can only accept plastics number 1 & 2. If the number is higher or if there is no number marked on the container, please dispose in with your garbage.
  • DON'T put your newspapers/magazines in plastic shopping bags; newspapers in brown paper bags will be accepted.
  • DON'T break glass before putting in bin.
  • DON'T place light bulbs, ceramic glass, mirrors, items made of clay, chemical or oil containers, or laminated glass in with your recyclables.
  • DON'T place empty egg cartons or wax milk containers in with your recyclables (plastic milk containers numbered 1 & 2 will be accepted)
  • DON'T place aerosol cans (even empty ones) in with your recyclables.

Please note this is an abbreviated list. Please call 378- 2200 for further information and details of drop off locations.

Special Pick Up:
An appointment is necessary for the disposal of “burnable” bulk items. The limit is six (6) items per household. Rugs must be rolled and tied and must not exceed 2 feet in diameter and 6 feet in length. Items must be placed at the curb the night before collection. Items not at the curb by 7:00 am on the scheduled day might not be picked up if the driver has already passed the house. It will then be necessary for you to reschedule. Please call Village Hall at (516) 599-1200 for an appointment or if you have any questions.

NOTE: Contractors MUST dispose of all building material debris. The Village is not responsible for disposal of “professional garbage”.
